Drake is best as a rapper when he is making pop rap that is anthemic and energetic. “God’s Plan” in particular is the type of song that is energetic and fun despite its subject matter. This is most notable on Side A of the album, which ends up making songs like “God’s Plan” and “I’m Upset” stand out. This is done primarily in his monochromatic style of delivery which makes the rap songs a chore to get through. Scorpion clocks in at just under 90 minutes, and on 25 tracks Drake boasts about his wealth, his prowess in rap and with women, delivers lines about his fellow rappers, and talks about his role as a father. The difference is that on many of his other albums, he has done it better with better songs and more energetic delivery. Throughout his career as a major label artist, Drake has made the arena of emo- rap his own since he first released Thank Me Later back in 2010. When listening to Drake’s fifth ‘studio’ album Scorpion, the phrase that best sums it up would be excessive despondency.
